MIXTAPE REVIEW: g3rle - UpInTheAir

Rating: 10/10

Raised in AZ, and refined in Los Angeles, artist Known as "g3rle"
Releases "UpInTheAir" a composition of classic sample chops and punchy breakbeats.
simple & classic boom map for hip hop heads and groovy listeners.

g3rle's  productions generally bring together conventional hip-hop drums, a sensitive ear for off-to-the-side melodies, and an overdose of oddly moving atmosphere. "Trumpet Flower" begins with a buzz of in-the-red Melodic sounds along with a hard snare and heavy trumpets at points. "Aint No Way" leads off with a vocal sample, and then suddenly the beat drops and the percussion begins eerily humming along. Later on, blasts of pianos rumble through, along with a dope breakdown to re enter the instrumental. When the beat drops the next time around, it's accompanied by some rainy, Blade Runner-style strings. But it's g3rle's attention to hip-hop structure that makes these beats so emotionally devastating. The desperate melodrama comes through in the hesitant build-ups and explosive arrival of the samples & drums. And the lingering sense of sadness is communicated when those drums sneak away and all that's left is a layer of whimpering vintage haze. For all of their experimental tendencies, some of these beats  are essentially, sample-based loops
.
UpInTheAir makes it clear that g3rle is part of an expanding group dope producers like Alchemist, Madlib, 9th Wonder & Jahlil Beats. But his beats, heard without vocals, become even more interesting and arguably on point.
