Indie Artist Spotlight: Brooklyn-Based Hip-Hop Artist Nino Khayyam | @NinoKhayyam

For Khayyam, it’s our individual decisions and actions that dictate our contributions to society, and it is the sum of these parts through which he hopes to share his art and inspire others. Never without a bottle of Fireball in the booth, Khayyam is making waves across New York for the inferno he brings to the studio.

Khayyam is a Brooklyn-based Hip-Hop artist whose music encapsulates the struggles and shortcomings of inner city life. With a convincingly trill vibe that is imbued with narratives of overcoming his troubled past, Khayyam steps up to the plate with a slew of hard-hitting Hip-Hop.

Khayyam is inspired by an eclectic range of music. Growing up, he idolized Bob Marley, Booba, and Bill Withers and Kurt Cobain to name just a few. He also cites his grandfather, a highly talented guitarist as a pivotal influence, along with anyone in music who put 100% of their soul into their art while simultaneously affecting culture itself.

Khayyam gravitated towards the booth in the late 90s, though it wasn’t until he wrote ‘F.W.N.’ that momentum truly began rolling. It was this single that would propel his career forward, with NYC clubs like WIP, Greenhouse, and Veranda all started showing strong support and giving Khayyam regular rotation.

Khayyam has a mixtape out now, ‘Pre-Season’, plus two singles titled ‘My Bag’ and ‘Pray For Me’, which serve as a prelude to his forthcoming untitled album. Prior to the release of Khayyam’s album, he will drop another mixtape, ‘Opening Day’. Further release details to follow soon.

His upcoming shows include a release party in NYC with DJ Spin King (November 12th 2019), and another with DJ Freedom (November 14th).

REME – Move

Houston rapper REME turning up the heat with new single, “Boom”

HOUSTON, TX – No matter what you do in life, there will always be folks who don’t take you seriously. REME is dishing up a soundtrack for everyone who’s not getting the respect they deserve with his new single, “Boom.” Tired of people not believing in what he is doing, and how he’s doing it, REME sought to take the heat to another level with this heavy hitting track. With its very aggressive and speedy style, “Boom” is meant to make a statement about how serious REME is about his craft.

While his previous single “Move” was more of a dark remnant, the new single has an uptown, space-the-chase vibe. REME’s lyricism is characterized by a rapid delivery of metaphors and a lot of phrasing. REME brought his aggression into the studio to make his point and to put out a hype song to get the fans going. The new single is slated to drop during the third week of November, and will be his first track published on all major digital platforms.

A serious and committed artist, REME writes from personal experience and what he has seen others go through. He also views what’s happening in society in a different light and puts that perspective into his art. His music speaks to those who have suffered from an unhealthy state of mind. “My music is for anybody who has been in that dark place,” REME stated. 

While other rappers are content to rhyme about topics that aren’t positive, REME is conscious about directing his energy towards more fun and uplifting themes. He believes that “money, drugs and jewelry don’t make the artist” and works to have a beneficial impact. “If you’re gonna do all this, you have to give back or show a way where others can make their way. That’s what I plan to do.”

Born and raised in Houston, REME grew up listening to a diverse range of artists, including Outkast, Busta Rhymes, Snoop Dogg, Biggie Smalls, Gucci Mane, Missy Elliott and Kanye West. He has always been around people involved in music and others trying to get the experience. Being exposed to music for so much of his life lead REME to pursue his own music career.

The new single follows on the success of REME’s “DREMELAND” album, which has over 30 thousand streams on SoundCloud. “Boom” launches a new project which is in the works, and another single is set to follow. Currently pushing two new projects, Playboy Ronnie returns with a slew of hits in the bag. He continues to build on his momentum with the release of two new projects.

It’s been a few months since we’ve heard from the Orlando homie Playboy Ronnie. Its always a special event when he sends over new material to review. Last time we ran across each other he sent over “Hard Enough” which now has more than 10K streams and growing on Sound Cloud. This time he sent us not one, but two EP’s, a new single, and an eye catching new video for yet another single.

Both EP’s titled “Say Less” and “Say More” feature 5 tracks each, the main singles are “Guns And Butter” and “Mercy“. Its a dope collection of music, the Orlando native taps in and brings the summertime vibes from Florida.

His fans know that his grind, and versatility is unmatched. Playboy Ronnie peels back the layers to reveal himself, and to better connect with his fans. He does this when many of his peers are lacking substance and quality content in their music. Doing this he is able to capture his listener’s who are streaming his music and tuned into his visuals.

I took some time to listen to both projects. I hear a distinct difference between these projects when I sat back and tuned in. Playboy Ronnie is a talented artist who deserves more attention from the people, I believe once his music reaches a mainstream audience his fan base will grow with speed and efficiency, then its take-off time for him. Brandon McCrae – Nightmares & Dreams

New single from Brandon McCrae 
captures new sound of ‘hip pop’

PRINCE GEORGE COUNTY, MD – Brandon McCrae is the total package. This hip hop artist from Prince George’s County in Maryland writes, produces, mixes and masters all of his own music. And he has developed such a one-of-a-kind sound that people all along the East Coast have been sitting up and paying attention to.

His newest single, “Nightmares and Dreams,” is a mixture of hip hop and pop underneath an upbeat, fast-tempo groove that invites listeners into a good time. Self-described as a “catchy vibe,” the single is something that came from his attempt to combine multiple genres into one hard-hitting song that would put people in a groove and give them a good time.

McCrae has been producing since he was in high school. He also started battle rapping in high school, and by college had developed a unique sound to the point where he started selling his beats. He made a name for himself, first at North Carolina Central University and then at Morgan State University. That name has continued to grow to more fans all along the East Coast as he has continued to create hit after hit. 

“When I decided to become a Do-It-Yourself artist, I needed to learn how to mix, so I left Morgan State University and went to Full Sail University and joined the recording arts programs,” he said. “Since then, I have built a catalog which I am ready to release. My production and my flow set me apart from anybody else out there. My production is elaborate and intricate. I definitely have my own style, and I like to combine different styles so you can get the best of every world. I want to be known for being able to do it all – mixing, producing, writing. A lot of music sounds the same today and I want people to be able to distinctively tell my music apart because of the quality.”

McCrae not only writes, produces and mixes all of his music, but he also plays multiple instruments. He plays the drums, violin, piano, guitar, and a variety of other instruments whenever the mood strikes. He’s inspired by stories from life – whether his own stories or those of people who come in and out of his life. Sometimes his lyrics talk about the up and downs of life but more often than not, his music has a message paired with “just good music.” He aspires to leave an impact on the world in ways similar to his inspirations – Kanye West, Chain Smokers, Lost Kings and Chance the Rapper. 

In addition to “Nightmares and Dreams” which dropped July 12, McCrae is working on an EP that he plans to release later this fall.

Preston Wayne - Problem

Preston Wayne has no problem blending smooth rap with a tight melody in his new single “Problem”

LOS ANGELES, CA – Rap artist Preston Wayne’s new single, “Problem” is a super party record with a ton of energy. Released in late June, “Problem” is a song that anyone can relate to. “We all feel like at some point we’re a problem,” said Wayne. Written in his living room, Wayne describes the song as “Very crazy. Something you want to play at night on your way out to hit the town.” 

Rising from his own problems (sleeping on the floor in a house full of college students and eating ramen noodles every day), Preston recently performed at the EmergeLV Festival in Las Vegas. That’s one thing he loves about the music business – entertaining. For Wayne, it feels “overwhelming, in a good way. You feel accomplished when people like your stuff. When I can make a thousand or five thousand people feel the same and like and enjoy something, it feels really good … like I ran a 5K and took first place. It also makes you want to get even better, to do the same to a million other people.”  

Two years ago, Wayne left a thriving rap music scene in Billings, Montana where he and his crew had been going strong for years. Although the city is exploding with new talent and is a stop for touring rap artists, Wayne was ready to move forward and relocated to Los Angeles to take his career to the next level. It was a big change. Coming from Billings where people wave to each other, Wayne had never seen highways with more than two lanes before moving out to the coast. These days, when he needs rejuvenation, he can at least go to the beach!

Derryck “Big Tank” Thornton of One Tyme Entertainment (Fabolous, Zane, Queen Latifah, Tech N9ne, Christina Aguilera & Pussycat Dolls) discovered Preston through a mutual connection of Preston’s brother, Austin. Tank heard something in Preston and requested a meeting. After signing Preston, Tank reached out to his longtime friend – one of the most prolific A&R minds in the game and former president of Aftermath, Mike Lynn (Eminem, 50 Cent, Game, Eve, Lukas Graham, Anderson .Paak & Bruno Mars) – to partner on Preston Wayne. Mike Lynn, together with his business partner and branding maven, Dano Leman founded Reven8te which is an imprint distributed by INgrooves/UMG and they immediately believed in Preston Wayne and offered to team up with Big Tank’s One Tyme Entertainment. Preston’s team is strong and he’s come out swinging.

As a brand new artist who is just getting started, the extreme stuff hasn’t happened yet. But there’s a storm coming. Preston has thousands of hot songs stacked up. Currently putting together an album, he feels that singles are important and function as “One-song albums.” “When I’ve looked at a lot of albums, they always do their high numbers on the first three tracks. Why not drop a bunch of one-song albums, technically, so you know that they’re listening? Dropping singles is the most effective way of getting your music heard all the way through.”

You will definitely want to listen all the way through and listen carefully for hidden references to his home state. Preston says “I’m always gonna leave hints about Montana!”

Richie Carter - I’m Sad

Richie Carter shares real pain of loss with new single “I’m Sad”

ROCKFORD, IL – Richie Carter’s haunting single, “I’m Sad” is from the six-track EP of the first songs written after Richie’s mother passed away unexpectedly. After inheriting money, Richie blew a lot of it. Making some bad decisions, he found himself getting into trouble for the same things that upset his mother before she passed away.

Richie released two EPs at the same time, like an A-Side / B-Side release in the style of an R&B album. A combination of R&B and Rap, each six song collection has its own theme. The “Too Much Whiskey” EP contains “I’m Sad” which Richie describes as sounding like Lil Peep meets Mac Miller. A “self-loathing song,” it is relevant for today’s audience because it’s openly sad and demonstrates the ability to understand and accept what makes a person sad, instead of trying to run or hide from the feeling.

The opening track of “I’m Sad” serves as the first stepping stone of the sorrow and harsh reality that money can’t replace a life, progressing towards the last track, “Too Much Whiskey.” While recording the last track, Richie had to stop recording several times because of his emotional state. The artist is very honest, trying to do everything through his music. The creation process is therapeutic and helps him to see his situation from a different perspective.

The “Sappy Hour” EP was born out of a long distance relationship which began after his mother passed away and has since resulted in his engagement! The six songs on this EP were written for the woman who is now his fiancée.

Both EPs were illustrated by Xclusive Illustration. They were recorded in a little basement studio in Rockford, IL that Richie has been using for over a decade. He has recorded in big studios in Los Angeles and Chicago, but Richie will tell you that Rockford’s engineer, Neal Howard, is one of the best. When he was 17 years old, Richie found Neal and has been working with him ever since. J Caspersen is the producer for the entire project.

A rambunctious and curious person, Richie cultivates his curiosity and tries to engage in anything that he is curious about. He feels this has much to do with the bold and open quality of his music which makes it more relatable.

Richie wants everyone to know that it pays to be patient and to keep trying. “A lot of people get the perception that they need to be at a certain place at a certain time,” says Richie, who used to write a school newspaper piece called “Direction Over Destination.” “Don’t worry so much about where you end up at. Just try to go in the right direction of what you really want to do and you’ll find something in that path. Just follow your heart and do what you want to do. Don’t expect to be exactly what you want to be. But you’re gonna find something you enjoy doing if you just go down the path that you enjoy walking.”
